Expanding Access to Alcohol and Drug Counselling in North Lanarkshire
We are pleased to launch our new Alcohol and Other Drugs Counselling Service in North Lanarkshire.
Murray’s Initiative has been providing support for people affected by alcohol in Glasgow for over 60 years, and we are now pleased to expand our support to neighbouring local authorities. It is recognised that access to compassionate, person-centred support can provide life-changing opportunities for individuals affected by alcohol or other drugs. In North Lanarkshire, our new counselling service, fully funded by the North Lanarkshire Alcohol and Drug Partnership (NLADP), represents an important step forward in improving access to support within local communities.
Our Alcohol and Other Drugs Counselling Service in North Lanarkshire offers a safe, welcoming space for individuals experiencing harm from their own alcohol and other drug use, providing support grounded in empathy, collaboration and respect. The service aims to support people in making positive, meaningful changes in a way that feels right for them.
“We are very proud to be launching this new drug and alcohol counselling service in North Lanarkshire, ensuring more people can access the compassionate, person-centred support they need, when they need it most. Murray’s Initiative service is about empowering individuals and offering real hope for recovery and long-term wellbeing.”
Lesley Ross, CEO
The funding provided by NLADP will enable individuals to access free, confidential, one-to-one counselling sessions delivered within local communities across North Lanarkshire including: Cumbernauld, Coatbridge, Airdrie, Bellshill, Wishaw and Motherwell. The service will be embedded locally to reduce barriers to access, such as travel and stigma.
The service will be delivered by an experienced and qualified counsellor, providing a consistent and empathetic space where individuals can reflect on their experiences, whether they are considering reducing their substance use or stopping altogether. This flexible, person-led approach recognises that recovery looks different for everyone.
Referrals can be made through the local North Lanarkshire Addiction Recovery Teams, ensuring a seamless pathway to support.
