Community Engagement

Starting the conversations that save lives.

At Murray’s Initiative, we bring alcohol awareness and early intervention directly to people across Greater Glasgow through community engagement.

Community Engagement is delivered via Alcohol Brief Interventions (ABIs). For over a decade, our team has delivered ABIs in everyday settings - from pharmacies, health centres and job centres to colleges, supermarkets and community events.

  • An ABI is a short, evidence-based conversation that helps people think about their drinking and, if needed, take steps to reduce it. Research shows that 1 in 8 people who receive an ABI cut their drinking to safer levels - making ABIs one of the most effective public health tools for tackling alcohol harm.

  • By talking to people as they go about their day, ABIs often provide a crucial first step toward positive change. For example:

    • Client A - Living in temporary accommodation and drinking 8-10 pints of lager a day, this client was connected to counselling, housing support and recovery groups through an ABI. Today, he is building a more stable and healthy life.

    • Client B - Drinking over 200 units of alcohol a week, this client accessed a home detox and ongoing counselling after being referred through our ABI team. Without that initial contact, he may never have known where to turn for help.

  • We deliver ABI Skills Training, a 1-day course aimed at practitioners working with individuals to enable them to have open, non-judgmental conversations about alcohol. Our ABI training will provide you with the skills to hold evidence-based, short, structured conversations, focused on alcohol, with the people you work with. You will learn how to motivate and support clients to consider and, if appropriate, plan changes in their behaviour.

    • One in eight ABIs will achieve a reduction of drinking to within safer drinking levels.

    • One in 282 ABI’s carried out will save a life.

    • ABIs’ are quick and easy to deliver. It can take less than 10 minutes.
